Der Achsensprung beruht auf der Konvention einer Handlungsachse, d.h. der Achse etwa zwischen zwei Figuren. Wird diese Achse zwischen zwei Einstellungen überschritten, wechselt die Kamera also auf die gegenüberliegende Seite des Geschehens, wechseln die Objekte im Bild ihre Seite, von links nach rechts und umgekehrt. Etwa im klassischen Hollywood-Kino wird von einer Handlungsachse ausgegangen, die für den Erhalt des Eindrucks von Kontinuität und einen möglichst unsichtbaren Schnitt nicht überschritten werden soll.
The concept of 'crossing the line' is based on the convention of an axis of action, i.e. the axis between two figures. If the axis is crossed between two shots, meaning if the camera frames the action from the opposite side, the objects in the image change position from left to right and vice versa. Classic Hollywood cinema relies on an axis of action within the image which must not be crossed to keep the impression of continuity and the cuts ideally invisible.
